The Value of Cooperative Ownership (Members)
Credit Unions are owned by their members. As an owner, each member has an interest in the success of the credit union. Members express their concerns and interests by choosing who will represent them on the Board of Directors. Board members are selected from among the membership. The Board sets the strategic direction for the organization, provides guidance to management, sets policy and interest rates, and assures there is oversight of the daily operations through an internal audits (Supervisory) committee.
Eligibility for Central Vermont Medical Center, Inc. Credit Union (CVMCCU) membership is defined in the Credit Union by-laws as follows:
“The field of membership shall be limited to: Employees of Central Vermont Medical Center, Inc. members of the Medical Staff, members of the Board of Trustees, members of the Board of Directors, Auxiliaries, Employees of Central Vermont Medical Center, Inc. Credit Union, immediate families of the eligible members, and Household Member as defined by Regulation B-96-2, and any organizations comprised of the most part of the same people.”
Each member of CVMCCU is required to maintain an ownership interest consisting of one regular share account with a minimum balance of $25.00. The regular share account represents the ownership interest of the member. Regular share accounts earn interest, and the rate paid on these accounts is periodically set by the Board of Directors.

History
The Credit Union came into being when nine employees of the Central Vermont Hospital petitioned the Commissioner of Banking to approve their application to form a credit union. On March 19th, 1970 the Articles of Association were submitted to the Commissioner’s office, and the application was approved by the Commissioner on April 2nd, 1970.
The organization was chartered as the Central Vermont Hospital Employees Credit Union. In 1973 members voted to change the name to Central Vermont Medical Center, Inc. Credit Union.
In the early years Lucille Carrier ran the entire operation from a small room in the “basement office complex”, in an area just outside the human resource department. Longer term members may also remember Lynn Tattersall and Susan Golden as former Credit Union Managers.
As the business expanded so did the need for space and staff. The Credit Union has relocated three times since 1970, taking up residence in its present offices in the fall of 2006. The current staff of four meet the needs of 1,600 members.
Although the Credit Union operates out of a single location, members have access to their funds, and accounts anywhere in the world. The Credit Union offers ATM services at two locations in the hospital and is a member of the Falcon network a provider of ATM services throughout the state and beyond. Our web site provides members with access to all their accounts, along with the ability to transfer funds between accounts, and pay their bills electronically.
The financial services industry has changed dramatically since the inception of the Credit Union. Our core values haven’t changed, we are here for the benefit of the members. Two of the charter members of the Credit Union continue to use our services; in fact we continue to meet the needs of our first member.
